When it comes to popping the question with style, the setting should be memorable, which is why, just as with weddings, destination proposals are becoming in- creasingly trendy for couples of all ages. What could be more romantic than getting engaged in an exciting new place or, better yet, saying “yes” in a destination that has special meaning to both of you?
The latter is how it happened for Mariam Petrosian. After sitting very still for more than an hour in Disneyland’s vibrant New Orleans Square with her boyfriend, Arman Khachatrian, she could not gure out why everyone was staring, or why, earlier that day, his Fitbit showed that his heart was racing.
The pair was posing for a caricature to celebrate their two-year anniversary as a couple. (It had taken Khachatrian ve months to work up the nerve to ask her out after they met while working as LA County social workers in January 2013.)
“I thought, ‘Wow, this caricature must be really good,’ because people were just stopping and watching,” remembers Petrosian.
Then, as The Lion King’s “Circle of Life” began to play, the caricature artist turned the drawing around so Petrosian could see it.
“My knees went weak,” she says. “I was not expecting that at all.”
In the caricature, Khachatrian was down on one knee, asking Petrosian to marry him. And when Petrosian shifted her eyes from the drawing back to her boyfriend, he was in the very same pose. The nightly reworks show began just as she said “yes,” and the crowd that had formed started to cheer.
“I was a nervous wreck,” says Khachatrian, who had arranged the caricature proposal with Disney several days earlier. “For her, it was another day at Disneyland; meanwhile, I was counting down the minutes. She’s a huge Disney fan, so it made sense to propose there.”
Their big day is set for this coming May, and, naturally, it will include a Disney-themed bridal shower.
“I relive that moment every time we go back to Disneyland,” says Petrosian.
